Mama Karanga is the name given to fishmongers on the Kenya coast, most of whom are women whilst the men do the fishing. This project falls under our S.H.E. Initiative and is aimed at improving and ensuring food security on the coastline. Mama Karangas and the Womens Groups that they are part of are well placed to achieve this. Phase 1 of the project has been started in the recently formed Kuruwitu Co managed Area. Working with the security of tenure and under the set Management plan and Bye laws we aim to empower the Mama Karangas through capacity building. Our set plan will include improved techniques in data collection, baseline surveys, marine spatial planning, reduced fish catch loss and improving value chains to name a few

Oceans Alive recently launched our S.H.E project aiimed at supporting women and their families in 3 main categories - Social, Health and Environment. This capacity project is to support and empower Women and Womens Groups to improve their livelihoods
