LOCALLY MANAGED MARINE AREAS

Coastal community engagement in marine conservation

EXPANDING PROTECTED AREAS

We are working hard to catalyse the rapidly growing community-led movement of LMMA’s in Kenya. Oceans Alive recognises that for life above the surface to flourish, we must also nurture and protect the life beneath it.

Sustainable marine conservation projects

CREATING TENGEFU'S.

The original LMMA set up at Kuruwitu in 2006 has been so successful in conserving biodiversity and improving the surrounding fishery that it remains a no-take zone today. It is an essential element of the LMMA model, which inspired a locally-led movement in Kenya; now, over 30 LMMA's have been set up directly influenced by the Kuruwitu model's effectiveness in restoring fisheries.

These protected areas are an investment in nature and have become important alternative income-generating areas through eco-tourism.

Oceans Alive supports new LMMA’s throughout the Kilifi coastline within the Co-Managed areas. We are working with County and State fisheries to support the UN goal to protect 30% of our oceans by 2030.
