KURUWITU, Kenya In a significant stride for community-led marine conservation, Project REEL (Restoring Reef Ecosystems for Enhanced Livelihoods), through our partner Coral Guardian, has successfully concluded a comprehensive social survey across all six major landing sites in the Kuruwitu area. The initiative engaged 268 local fishers in in-depth conversations to deeply understand their relationship with the marine ecosystem.
For generations the ocean has provided more than just food and income. It is a source of cultural identity, heritage, and community resilience. Recognising that effective conservation cannot be imposed but must be co-created, Project REEL placed listening at the core of its mission.
You cannot protect what you don’t understand, and that understanding must include the people who depend on the ecosystem every single day.
Our goal was to move beyond raw ecological data and truly hear the voices of the fishers. Their decades of experience and unique perspectives are the most valuable tools we have for designing sustainable solutions.
